Hear, hear! I second that.

I think this is a great idea, and we're just beginning to use it. I'd love to see some more people get involved - maybe we need some advertising. Or at least some pictures.

Joe

Well it's been a year since the CVWiki saw the light of day, and I think it has proven to be a worthwhile companion to CV.Org

I do feel, though, that there should be at least 2 admins to help ensure continuity in the face of life's ever-shifting sands.

Thanks for the feedback, Joe.

I've increased the font-size slightly. If the page tags are useful then they stay - but what I have done is restrict the number in the side-bar to 12. The full set (currently 15) can be accessed by clicking the "Page Tags" section header.

Cheers
Graeme

Hey Graeme - looks good. As an old pair of eyes, I might like the blue links font 1 size larger, but what you have is okay. The rest seems all good to me. Where would you put the page tags if they came off the sidebar? I actually use them on occasion; as I'm very forgetful, it'd be nice if I could see the tags in some obvious place.
Thanks for the work,
Joe

I've made some cosmetic alterations to the side-bar:

matched its background to the top-bar

reduced the font size used

added horizontal dividing lines

I've also added a back-links section (Links to this Page)

Does anyone have any style preferences or suggestions?
Maybe you liked the side-bar the way it was?

Personally I would like to remove the Page tags section from the side-bar.

I apologize if my last post sounded as though I was trying to get you to change your primary browser. I use several browsers myself depending on the task in hand (Opera mainly but also Konqueror and Firefox) and my intention was only to suggest a solution that would enable you to access this site from your Mac.

I also totally agree with you that there's a world besides Windoze. My home machines all run Linux, some in multi-boot configurations. I run the Kubuntu distro primarily on this, my main development machine, though it will also boot into Fedora, Slackware, Puppy and PC-BSD - not forgetting (though I try to) WinXP.

Thank you for that information. Safari is the best and origin Web browser for the Mac, so there is no chance for the wiki team to convince me to switch to another one. Thus I am forced to still use my Windows PC for writing here. After having completed my current migrating from PC to Mac in some future, I hope for this wiki to support also Mac users' native browser then. There is an IT world beside of Windows …

1: I've long wanted a supplement to chessvariants.org. It's a wonderful site, but not very conducive to discussion of unfinished ideas. Publishing a variant seems to indicate that one thinks it's ready to be played; I would love to see a place where one could just throw out some half-baked idea and see how others respond. Having such a place may also cut down on the number of variants submitted to chessvariants.org that haven't been fully thought out and playtested.

2-4: I'm not sure whether or not a Wiki is the solution. I wanted something like a vBulletin forum, but perhaps a Wiki can be just as good or better. I'm unsure only because I'm not too familiar with Wikis (as a contributor, anyway; I've read plenty of Wikipedia).

I think it's worth a try.

Agreed there is no need, but this is a very nice forum in which to do things that the CVPages doesn't really have a format for. I'm definitely in favor of this; I expect it to be looser than TCVP.

The last poster said: " For my own part I see it as an opportunity to discuss the subject of CVs, their classification, design, boards, pieces, and implementation, in general; rather than the rules of any one CV or the properties of any particular piece."

The initial impetus was from a CV member, who said in TCVP Comments:"…you could enter a game idea and then other users could review it and make suggestions, but not changes this would make the site quicker maybe you could have an idea where someone enters a game idea and others enter more ideas for that game so it would multiple authors and everyone who was a contributor could help with the game."

I think this format is ideal for both. We coulld easily have a theory section, and a sandbox section in which to build specific games, either singly with comments, or cooperatively. I look forward to doing both.

Joe

I think we are dealing with four questions here:

Is there a need for supplement?

If yes, What might a supplement provide?

Should a supplement use a Wiki format?

If yes, Should it be provided through wikidot.com?

My own responses to these are:

Not sure if there's a need but there's no harm in having a supplement.

The answer to this is down to the community itself. For my own part I see it as an opportunity to discuss the subject of CVs, their classification, design, boards, pieces, and implementation, in general; rather than the rules of any one CV or the properties of any particular piece.

I think the Wiki format is ideal for a such a site.

To echo David Howe, Seems like a good solution to me.
