Shogi Shortrange Core

Introduction

Pieces described in this series of pages form the core of shogi shortrange. They are the most numerous given the three parameters described in Shogi Shortrange, specifically they have weight of 12, balance of 0 and slide of 2. These pieces are rookish1 in nature, and are often a combination of stepper and leaper.

Archetypes

Pieces in the core has a reduced set of archetypes then the full shogi shortrange pieces. Whereas the full set has 63 archetypes, the core has only the 12 described below:

1:
* * *
x x x
^

2:
* * x
x x *
^

3:
* x *
x x *

4:

5:

6:

7:

8:

9:

10:

11:
x x x

^

12:
x * x
* * x
^

Legend:

x: where a piece can go.
*: where a piece cannot go.
^: the piece with carat indicating forward direction.

Pieces

Pieces can be simply constructed2 by taking one archetype, combining it with a vertically reflected version of another or same archetype, add in the slide, then symmetrically completing the footprint3.

For example we can take 6:

* * x
x * x
^

Add in 10 reversed (reflected vertically)

* * x
x * x
^
* * x
x x *

Put in an inner slide

* * x
x * x
^ x *
* * x
x x *

Then complete it symmetrically, we get:

x * * * x
x * x * x
* x ^ x *
x * * * x
* x x x *

Bestiary

The core pieces are organized by their forward going archetype, with each archetype forming their own page. In these pages I will denote their archetypes as well as genotypes. For archetype designation I will use the following format:

C[Forward-archetype][Slide-indicator][Reversed-archetype]

C denotes the use of shogi shortrange core archetypes

Forward-archetype
The archetype of the forward going moves
Slide-indicator
How the piece moves to the side. '.' denote only single side step movement. ';' denote only jumping to second side square move. ':' denotes either step or jump. '|' denotes no side move possible.
Reversed-archetype
The archetype vertically reflected to provide the backward going moves.

For example the piece described in the last section:

x * * * x
x * x * x
* x ^ x *
x * * * x
* x x x *

Would have archetype designation: C6.10

Since in shogi shortrange core there will always be one kind of slide, only '.' and ';' slide indicators will be used.
