Diagram 1
Basic Steps

Introduction

This page looks at pieces which move no more than 4 or 5 cells: the single-cell steppers, the two-cell leapers, and their compounds.

In short (pun intended!) it looks at those pieces covered by the ShortRange Project

Extended adjacent trigs are not considered in this section.

Basic Steps

These are illustrated in Diagram 1

  • white trigs a and b are connective steps
    • the dark-red trigs are reached from a by a point- or p-step
    • the dark-green trigs are reched from b by an edge- or e-step
  • red trigs c and d are chromatic steps
    • the dark-red trigs are reached from c by an idiochromatic- or i-step
    • the dark-green trigs are reached from d by an allochromatic- or a-step

a and c represent the two possible trigonal interpretations of the Ferz' move

  • a : the p-ferz or long ferz, hits 9 trigs and is not colour-bound
  • c : the i-ferz or simply ferz, hits 6 trigs and is colour-bound

b and d represent the two possible trigonal interpretations of the Wazir's move

  • b : the e-wazir or short wazir, hits 3 trigs
  • d : the a-wazir or simply wazir, hits 6 trigs

to be continued…
